Today’s report is a clear reminder that while in previous budgets our goals were largely met through the elimination of fossil fuels in favour of sustainable power generation this budget requires serious policy interventions to electrify industry amongst other initiatives such as electrification of  domestic heating, rapid adoption of Electric Vehicles and widespread implementation of sustainable aviation fuel. The UK risks being behind on meeting its net zero targets without clear market signals from Government now. Manufacturers are committed to industrial decarbonisation, and many have made great strides to become more energy efficient, but they cannot do so alone, electrification of industry must be a cornerstone of the forthcoming industrial strategy

The 7th Carbon Budget affirms what industry can clearly see - that Electrification is going to be the bedrock of UK industrial power in the decades ahead. Up to eighty per cent of UK industry could electrify today if policies did not inhibit the investment required to do so. The technology needed to electrify industrial processes exists without any need for additional research and development or equity funding. If the UK is to see its economy grow and we are to ensure that we have a financially sustainable future for our critical industrial base in the decades to come, we need to enable electrification today
